Prince Peter Alexeivitch Kropotkin, the anarcho-communist revolutionary and scientist, descended from old Russian nobility. Nevertheless, Kropotkin chose to do away with his social standing and the riches it promised for social rebellion. The Conquest of Bread is his 1892 book. Although originally written in the French language, it first appeared as a series of articles in the anarchist journal Le Révolté. In the book, Kropotkin identifies what he believes to be the deficiencies of the economic systems of feudalism and capitalism and why he believes they thrive on and maintain poverty and scarcity.
