I am looking for a land surveyor?

Very random. However, my mom is getting a fence built and our next door neighbor said that he will sign off on it once we have the land surveyed. In all honesty it makes perfect sense. I just never had to do this before and need a little guidance. I have googled a few places and got about three quotes. I guess my question is:
Is there anyway we can do this ourselves? Like is there some special marking that every builder does that lets you know exactly where your property starts and stops?
What is the average cost roughly for this service?

Thank you in advance!

Your mortgage documents have general lot sizes, I spoke with my local surveyor and was told you need to stay 6-12 inches off lot lines. You can also ask your county surveyor where to find the digital copy of the subdivision plats that will have survey information for each lot. In Indy, the city website has aerials, plat photos, and dimensions.

Hi Danielle, I think the neighbor is correct that getting it surveyed is the best course of action. Your local governing authorities may also have stipulations on how close to your property line the fence may sit, so having an expert check it out is probably best. As far as cost goes, it can cost anywhere between $300-500, depending on the size of property and type of terrain. I hope this helps! Keep us posted.
