Our old water heater finally failed and dumped its water into our basement this morning at 3am. Can you recommend a reliable company to install an on-demand water heater at a reasonable price?
A lot depends on your definition of reasonable price. I went through this last year. If you have gas already hooked up and nearby, then you’re probably good. I had gas at my house, but it was going to cost an additional $2800 over the cost of installing the unit to upgrade and run the gas line to where it needed to be (there wasn’t enough throughput to run the fireplace, gas range, and water heater). If you don’t have gas or were planning on an electric on-demand water heater, don’t even bother. In the end, I opted for a hybrid 50 gal tank that uses both a traditional heating element and a heat pump. It’s way more energy efficient than a traditional water heater and has the added benefit of running out of hot water so my wife and daughter don’t take 45 minute showers.
Hey Pat! I would concur with Ryan - a little investigation goes a long way with tankless. In terms of installers, I like Energy Works. Also had good results with Blue Flame though I didn't use them for tankless. One thing I've learned is that many HVAC companies staff up this time of year in order to handle the flood of AC jobs that arrive in early summer. Your mileage may vary depending on which tech shows up at your house :)
Thanks for the responses! Having done a little more research in the light of day I think that a tankless solution might not be right for us. I will post a separate question asking about water heater replacement in general.
