Replacement window advice

The choices for replacement windows is overwhelming...wood, vinyl, pvc, some are paintable or must be painted, some can't be painted. I think we want full replacement windows (not sash kits that have a smaller glass area). Any advice on which type of windows to choose? Favorite window manufacturer, and installer? Things to look for re: warranty and installation?
