We needed a new home printer, and I posted here a few months back. You can see the responses here: freshchalk.com/a/we-need-a-... I've had bad experiences with HP and a meh experience with Epson, so I decided to go with a Brother printer since it got such a resounding chorus of positive reviews. I bought the Brother HL-L3270CDW (jeez I wish they would give these printers names that anyone could remember!), and I've been so pleased with my purchase! Super easy to set up, and it's quick and responsive. I can't give a lot of info on ink volume experience yet because we haven't printed hundreds of pages, but the specs say we will get about 1,000 pages just on the starter cartridges and then 1,500 on the ones after that. For a color laser printer, it's a bargain!
Love my HP 8720. It’s probably more than you need, but has scanner with doc feed, duplex scanning and printing, and the instant ink service is actually amazing. No matter how you slice it, ink is how all inkjet printer companies make their money, and in the end the monthly fee is a savings for us with how much we print - so do the math for you. I am a little biased to HP, as my Dad holds several patents for the ink jet series when he worked with HP ; )
