I choose this book because I heard a lot about the author, and I'm so glad I did! I just couldn't put it down! A novel that will transport you to another time, it made me reflect about my own ancestors and their struggles so I could be who I am today. Beautiful and heartfelt, a must read!

Two half-sisters, Effia and Esi, are born into different villages in eighteenth-century Ghana. Effia is married off to an Englishman and lives in comfort in the palatial rooms of Cape Coast Castle. Unbeknownst to Effia, her sister, Esi, is imprisoned beneath her in the castle's dungeons, sold with thousands of others into the Gold Coast's booming slave trade, and shipped off to America, where her children and grandchildren will be raised in slavery. In this powerfully emotional novel, Yaa Gyasi seamlessly chronicles three hundred years oh Ghanaian history in an effort to herald the arrival of a major new voice in contemporary fiction.
