Bicycle Sport Shop closing

Sad to say goodbye to a local institution that's been a pillar of the Austin cycling community for 35 years. Owners Hill Abell and Laura Agnew just announced that they're selling the shops to Trek. On January 17 all four BSS locations will close their doors, to rebrand and reopen a few days later as Trek.

Best of luck to Hill and Laura. I'm willing to give Trek a chance, but I'd much rather find a friendly local shop to help me keep my old rockhopper rolling. I need someone who will appreciate the emotional connection I have to this bike after nearly 25 years. Any suggestions?

You should give Trek a shot. They do work on bikes from all brands. The company is based in Waterloo, WI and tries to maintain the local bike shop feel for all their shops. Full disclosure, my wife manages the Trek shop in Tukwila, WA. That said, if you’re looking for a shop that’s Texas owned, try Bicycle World. That was my go-to while living in Austin.

I hate to break the news to you Ryan Bruss, but Bicycle World shut down too. Sadly, these local shops are dropping like flies.

I won't rule out Trek. I know it's a good company and they make great bikes. But it's hard for a national brand to really match the feel of a local shop.
