Best vacuum cleaner for home with pet?

This seems like the best forum for consumer reporting! We are in the market for a new vacuum. We are a family of 5 with a cat and soon to be dog owners. We've had canister and upright and prefer upright for space saving. We are leaning towards dyson but would love more insight. We have hardwoods and carpet and want something easy for quick stair cleaning.

Hey Anne. I scanned the Wirecutter vacuum article. Things have really changed since we bought our crappy vacuum a few years ago...

Their top pick is the Shark Navigator Lift-Away, which is around $150. Great value. 4.5 stars on Amazon with 5k reviews. amazon.com/dp/B004Q4DRJW

Cordless vacs are much improved in recent years, but I'd skip them if you have a larger home, carpet, pets, etc. Pretty convenient for cleaning a kitchen or hardwood stairs, though. For what it's worth I think a broom might be the easiest way to clean hardwood stairs. Vacs are a bit clunky. A decent broom goes a long way.

Hands down Miele! They are the best of the best :) The Pet Care one is amazing and even has a power upholstery tool, which is great for grabbing cat / dog hair from sofas, etc. It is lovely! You can get a HEPA filter or charcoal filter for odor control. The vacuum bag seals shut after each use, keeping smells inside, and you definitely want something with vacuum bags with pets so the smell doesn't stick to the plastic. The hardwood floor attachment is beautiful as well. George at City Vacuum in Shoreline is amazing, 3rd generation vacuum shop store owner, and can show you everything. You also get a free joke every time you visit him!

+1 on the Shark!

Thank you all! The Miele topped the chart. However, we decided on the Shark (which is what we are replacing). Our house cleaners use this and we thought it would be a better investment as it will get a lot of wear and tear. We will have to replace more frequently. Again, thank you as this was so helpful.

I bought the ProForce 1500XP bagged upright 3 months ago. I'm happy with the vacuum so far. You can find it on Amazon for $380.

Anne, we chose the corded Shark for its powerful suctions. Two shepherd labs and lots of hair. Anyone with Shepherds know they have a nickname - Shed.phers. The Shark Lift Away does an excellent job on carpet, and floors.
