Has anyone sent away for DNA testing.

Have you investigated your genealogy with DNA testing? I love the PBS show, Finding Your Roots, with Henry Louis Gates. My mother and grandparents died when I was younger and a lot of family history is left unanswered. I am wondering about your experience. I talked with someone who discovered fairly recently through DNA testing they were a father and grandfather, LOL.

I used 23andme. Neat! Plus they keep telling me about more dna relatives, which is interesting. A few people have gotten in touch to tell me that I am their closest living relative. I have mixed feelings about that given that our "relation" is a 1% overlap in DNA. Still fun getting the emails, though.

My family and I also use 23andMe. It's pretty cool!

I'll check out 23 and Me. I was wondering if matching this with Ancestry.com would give a more robust picture.

I have done both 23andMe as well as Ancestry.com. It's pretty interesting to see the results and how they differe from the two different companies.

We did it for our dog, guess that doesn't help much in this case. :)

Julie, I'll include dogs, I want to get mine tested. They are siblings but one looks like a Beauceron, the other like a black Shephard. They are rescues and we are very curious. What service did you use for your dogs?

I did the 23 and Me and it is fun to see how my results differ from my kids and grandkids. Very interesting.

That is interesting. I wonder what it would be for brother and sister?

We did this. It's fun to see how much of a difference you are from your kiddos.

We did Ancestry.com, both before the kits and with DNA kits. I really liked the analysis that came back which proved some suspicions and also confirmed an existing blood connection.

My husband used AncestryDNA and the basic results were very interesting but you have to upgrade your subscription to get more deeper information.

I sent away my sample to 23andMe and Ancestry on the same day. Expecting my results in the next couple of weeks! I'll respond again when I have them -- unless I'm in jail being framed for murder because my DNA was allegedly found at a crime scene....😆🤣
UPDATE: So, Ancestry.com took about a month longer to get me results. I spent one afternoon spinning from news until I finally found an article that smoothed things over. I mean, when your aunt shows up as your half-sister, it kind of throws you. Haha Lesson learned -- since my mother was only 19 when my oldest brother was born, and her youngest sibling was only 10 or 11, she shows up as my half-sister. It's apparently a 10yr gap "thing." With her being only ~10yrs older than my oldest brother, the data has a 50-50 chance of putting my aunt in the half-sibling box. Who knew??

I have used both tests. Ancestry seems to take a little longer but has more detail. If you plan to build your family tree, I would recommend Ancestry over 23 and me.

I want to so badly but my conspiracy theorist in my kicks in - ha! They always have great sales during bigger holidays and Christmas time (50% off). I bet Mother's Day will bring about a special. I'm a true crime fanatic though so love how things are being solved.

Julie, too funny! If I don't hear from you soon....I'll send you a lawyer. Of course one that was recommended on Fresh Chalk :)

My daughters bought me a DNA get and I really like it. It is fun seeing where it says I am from and it's been interesting seeing who they link me to as far as family (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc. relatives).

We used the Wisdom Panel brand for our doggie DNA test. You register your kit when it arrives. You do the swab and send it back in the prepaid envelope. They will email the results when they are completed. It was very easy. I believe it was accurate. He is a super mutt, and it made us understand where is very long, very skinny legs, that do not match the rest of his body, came from.

Thanks Julie, I have two rescues, they look mostly like what the shelter said, Lab/Shephard, but my Sunny has a long snout and we are trying to figure out what she may have in her. I also heard it helps understand some of their quirks. My dogs have quirks, a lot of them.

I did Ancestry DNA testing couple years ago. The results are interesting and I was able to connect with very distant relatives.
