Cello Instructor

This could be a long shot, but does anyone in my FC network have a cello instructor to recommend? I'm looking for one my daughter who is 14 and at an intermediate skill level. (She'd prefer someone who specializes in that instrument -- a lot of the beginner instructors seem to be somewhat instrument agnostic.) I think we'd both eventually prefer for her to have lessons in person, but virtual/remote might be an option if we can't find someone in Seattle.

Would love to hear if you find a good teacher as Harper is in the same boat

My neighbor's daughter has played the cello since elementary school and now plays in her college orchestra. She highly recommends Mara Finkelstein in Magnolia. If you're interested, I can send you her number offline (out of respect for her privacy).

Thank you @mark_rector Steven Chayer! Kathleen Baxley - that would be great. You can DM me with the info if you don't mind.

Most definitely check out Meter Music School. My kids have not taken cello specifically. (They have done Sax, Piano, and Ukulele). It such a sweet little school in my CD neighborhood (also one in Columbia City). They do Zoom lessons during the pandemic for wind instruments and seem to have some in person with covid precautions at least for piano.

I would try Erika Pierson, whom I have heard perform in a few chamber music concerts in Seattle. While I am not familiar with her teaching style, her performances combine technical agility with a beautiful and lyrical tone.

Wendy Harris St Clair She's actually been taking lessons at Meter up to now! Our instructor is leaving and the person who remains isn't a dedicated cello teacher. But I do recommend the school - they've been a good fit for the last 3 years.

There’s a list of grad students/graduates of the UW School of Music on their website as another option. I took a few virtual lessons with Isabella Kodama recently (she’s in IN for school). Loved her! This is not in Seattle, but I took lessons growing up with Lisa Todd at UPPC in Tacoma (uppc.org/Mai) :)

Lori Goldston is perhaps the most gifted and interesting cellist I have had the pleasure to meet. She has done private lessons since 1980, and performed with hundreds of musicians in studio and on stage. She even played with Nirvana across America on tour and on MTV Unplugged. Really kind and interesting person.

Liz if you are still interested, Walter Gray plays cello for the Seattle Symphony and said he is willing to talk to you. 206-963-5486.

Hi Liz - a few years back I took up cello lessons and absolutely adored my instructor. Her name is Janet Neumann on Mercer Island. Not sure if that's geographically reasonable for you. If so happy to pass along her phone number directly. She taught students of all levels and was a professional herself. I could not recommend her more highly.
